More than 4,000 freshmen enroll at the University of Oklahoma each year, with 26 percent of the students in the 2013-14 freshman class arriving at OU from Texas. 220 students in that same freshman class are Houston Sooners – students who graduated from high schools in the Greater Houston area.
Assisting the University of Oklahoma with student recruitment activities is one of the rewarding ways the OU Club of Houston invites students to become Houston Sooners. We have the opportunity to share our love for the University with others, while helping students and their families with the challenging decision of where to continue their education after high school.
Generally during October and November, many high schools and school districts host “college fairs.” Representatives from colleges and universities gather together to provide information and answer questions about their degree programs, application and admission processes and deadlines, campus life and housing, tuition, fees, financial aid, etc. OU has two full time representatives focusing on recruitment in the Houston area: Melanee Hamilton and C. Don Bradley. Because many fairs are scheduled on the same evenings and require more than one representative to provide timely attention to the students and their families, Melanee and C. Don depend on our help.
The OU Club of Houston coordinates its Recruitment Team - a group of alumni and friends of the University to provide the necessary assistance. Team members are trained by OU staff to represent OU at the college fairs. OU occasionally also requests assistance from team members at other special events at high schools in the Houston area, to present OU scholarships during high school awards assemblies, and to host tables at the annual OU Day in Houston visit by OU President David Boren, for example.
The OU Club of Houston has one of the largest and most successful student recruitment programs of any alumni association outside the state of Oklahoma. For more information about the OU Club of Houston student recruitment program, please contact Rick McCalip, our student recruitment chairman, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
