In Memory of
James Ray Shadowens, Sr.
August 29, 1918 - January 14, 2012

We have lost another member of our Houston Sooner family.

James Ray Shadowens, Sr. went to Heaven to be with his Lord and the love of his life, Dorothy on Saturday, January 14, 2012. Ray was devoted to God, The Church of the Nazarene and his family and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 17th at Klein Funeral Home, 9719 Wortham Blvd., followed by graveside services at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway.

Ray and his twin sister Mae were born in Carterville, Illinois on August 20, 1918 to Henry and Pearl Shadowens. Ray and Mae were the youngest of nine siblings and most of their childhood and teenage years were spent in Dayton, Ohio. On September 5th, 1940, Ray married the most wonderful woman in his life, Dorothy Lewis. He graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in 1941 and then from the first class of the Nazarene Theological Seminary.

Ray was a devoted minister and pastor for over 45 years.  While serving in Norman, Oklahoma, he became a lifetime fan of Oklahoma University sports. Upon retiring in 1978, Ray and Dorothy moved to Houston to be close to their family. After 65 years together, Dorothy died in April, 2006.

He is survived by his daughter, Dee Shadowens and son, James R. Shadowens, Jr. and his two grandsons, Bradley James and Daniel Keil Shadowens. He is also survived by his cherished sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Beam and many nieces and nephews.

If you have attended OU Club football watch parties, coaches’ caravans and other events during the past many years, you have seen Ray Shadowens with his daughter Dee rooting for his beloved Sooners. Ray was a valued member of our Houston Sooner family that we will sincerely miss.

In lieu of usual remembrances, contributions in memory of James Ray Shadowens, Sr. may be directed to Olivet Nazarene University, 1 University Ave. Bourbonnais, Illinois 60914 or The Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
