Coach Barry Switzer will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Paul "Bear" Bryant College Football Coaching Awards Dinner, Thursday, January 15, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Houston. The award recognizes excellence in coaching on and off the field during a career, allowing recipients to take their place in history alongside such legends as Bryant. Recent Lifetime Achievement recipients include Tom Osborne, Glen "Bo" Schembechler, Darrell Royal and Lou Holtz.
Also at the dinner, the Paul "Bear" Bryant 2008 College Football Coach of the Year will be awarded.
The Paul "Bear" Bryant Awards honor excellence in coaching while raising funds to fight heart disease and stroke. Bryant himself suffered a heart attack prior to his death in 1983. Funds raised benefit research, community education and outreach programs for the American Heart Association.
