The OU Club of Houston would like to thank the many OU alumni and friends who volunteer their time to help recruit students at area high schools throughout the Houston area. Many of these volunteers have dedicated their valuable time for several years to help promote the benefits of an education at the University of Oklahoma. The OU Club greatly appreciates the support of these individuals provide for the University at local Houston-area student recruitment college fair programs. The OU Club of Houston offers you many fun, exciting and rewarding opportunities to become a part of the numerous events, activities and programs offered OU alumni, friends and fans throughout the Houston area. From the scholarship and student recruitment programs, to sponsoring professional networking events to social gatherings, watch parties, happy hours and athletic events, the OU Club of Houston offers something for everyone.

Benefits of joining the OU Club of Houston include:

Meet old friends and make new acquaintances;
Stay current with news and the many activities and events with the OU Club, OU alumni and friends in the Houston area, and with the University;
A fun atmosphere to enjoy OU activities and sporting events;
Discounts to OU Club activities and events;
Access to “Members Only” section of the Web site containing content not available to non-members.

There are two types of memberships available:

Individual memberships
Life memberships

An Individual membership is $35 per year. A Life membership is $1,000, payable in one lump sum or four payments of $250. Life members are members for life, and need not pay the annual $35 membership fee.

Sooner Football Radio Broadcast

Since 1968, the OU Club of Houston has sponsored live radio broadcasts of Sooner football games. Again this year, the games can be heard live on KCOH-AM 1430. It’s a tradition in Houston, much like the games themselves. In addition to the games, the OU Club broadcasts the entire pre-game show, beginning 90 minutes before kick-off, as well as the post-game and locker room shows. The Club also airs Sooner Sports Talk with Bob Stoops and Coaches Corner featuring OU assistant coaches, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings respectively, beginning at 7:05 p.m. But we couldn’t broadcast the games and coaches’ shows without your help. Meet This Years Scholarship Recipients

OU Club of Houston Awards its 2007 Scholarships to Cinco Ranch and Lamar High School Graduates The OU Club of Houston has awarded four-year scholarships to two outstanding Houston-area high school graduates. Amelia Redmond, a 2007 graduate of Cinco Ranch High School was awarded the Robert Simmer Memorial Scholarship, and Samantha Roe of Lamar High School was awarded the OU Club of Houston Scholarship. Amelia Redmond, Cinco Ranch High School, Katy, Texas Amelia, the daughter of Mike and Jill Redmond, graduated from Katy’s Cinco Ranch High School where she earned a 3.9 grade point average (based on a 4.0 grading scale). Amelia received many honors while at Cinco Ranch High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the German Honor Society, served as a D.A.R.E high school role model, and was a member of Young Life. In addition, Amelia played on the Cinco Ranch high school soccer team where she was named Best Forward and helped win the TPFC U-18 girls Division 1...

Golf Tournament

The OU Club of Houston sponsors an annual golf tournament every spring with proceeds funding the Robert W. Simmer scholarship. The tournament is a 4-person-per-team scramble and open to all Sooner alumni, fans and friends.

This past spring, 16 teams consisting of 63 players played in the golf tournament, raising $3,500 for the Simmer scholarship.

Beat Texas! Party

The Beat Texas! Party is an annual tradition in Houston! It’s one of the OU Club’s largest events of the year and a great way to connect with old friends, recharge your Sooner sprit and get ready for the OU-Texas football game.

And, you have an opportunity to win OU-Texas tickets!

The Beat Texas! Party is held the week of the OU-Texas game, usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening. Several pair of OU-Texas tickets are auctioned at the party. Also, one pair of tickets is raffled, with raffle tickets available for purchase at the door before the drawing at the Beat Texas party, and at football watch parties leading up to the OU-Texas game.

Additionally, Sooner memorabilia is auctioned at the party, with proceeds benefiting the OU Club of Houston scholarship fund. Check the Web site and calendar for the date and time for this year’s Beat Texas! Party.

Watch Parties

The OU Club of Houston official football watch party headquarters is at FOX Sports Grill, located in the Houston Galleria III, 5175 Westheimer, (northwest side of the Galleria at Westheimer and Sage). However, there are many locations throughout the Houston area that Sooner alumni and friends gather to watch OU football. The OU Club’s goal for watch parties is to provide a smoke-free and kid-friendly environment so parents can feel comfortable bringing little Sooner fans to the games. And of course, fans will be treated to plenty rounds of Boomer Sooner and Oklahoma fight songs too! Men’s and women’s basketball watch parties are held at SRO Sports Bar & Cafe, located at Northwest Mall, (9900 Hempstead Road – 18th Street at 610 Loop West). From happy hours, football and basketball watch parties, Sooner Caravans featuring OU coaches, the annual Beat Texas party, to professional and network luncheons, the OU Club offers something for everyone throughout the year.

Sooner Caravan

Join OU coaches, athletics department staff members and fellow Sooner fans for food and fun when the Sooner Caravan rolls into Houston. All Sooner alumni, friends and fans are invited to attend. Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione, Head Football Coach Bob Stoops, Men’s Head Basketball Coach Jeff Capel and Women’s Head Basketball Coach Sherri Coale, along with other notable sports personalities discuss previous season successes, outlooks for the coming year and the overall state of the athletics program. Additionally, Sooner memorabilia is available for bid the in OU Club of Houston’s silent auction, with proceeds going to the club’s scholarship fund.

The Caravan serves as a “thank you” to loyal Sooner fans, and provides the opportunity to learn more about the different events and activities the OU Club provides in the Houston area. The Sooner Caravan comes to Houston every other year. The next Caravan is scheduled for spring 2008. Be sure to check the calendar early next spring for the date and time.

Happy Hours

The OU Club of Houston hosts happy hours at various locations throughout the Houston area. The most notable happy hour is held the week before the football season begins. Check the Web site and calendar for dates, times and location for the next happy hour.

Athletic Game Trips

The OU Club of Houston sponsors bus trips to athletic events, primarily in the southeast/central Texas area. Most notably is the biennial trip to College Station to watch the OU-Texas A&M football game.

The weekend usually starts Friday evening with a “Beat A&M” pep rally and party. The Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band and OU cheerleaders sometimes make a surprise appearance. Saturday, Houston-area Sooner fans load several buses for the trip to College Station for the game. The Texas A&M weekend is a great way to see old friend and make new ones!

Other OU Club-sponsored trips to athletic events include the Baylor football game in Waco, and to Austin and College Station for men’s and women’s basketball games against Texas and Texas A&M, respectively. Please check the Web site and calendar for the next scheduled trip.

Network Luncheons

In 2002, the OU Club of Houston began sponsoring a series of luncheons entitled "OU in Houston" featuring guest speakers with direct or indirect ties with the University of Oklahoma. Previous speakers include:

Dr. Stephen Norwood, OU professor of American History;
The late Dennis J. O’Brien, director of OU’s Sarkey’s Energy Center;
Billy Tubbs, former OU men’s head basketball coach;
Ellen Censky, director of the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History;
Dr. Stephen Sloan, OU professor of political science and counterterrorism expert;
Robert Jordan, OU Law School graduate and former United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia;
Stephanie Rempe, OU associate athletics director and senior women’s administrator; and
Patty Gasso, OU softball coach.

These luncheons are an important part of the OU Club of Houston’s activities.

Special Events

From time to time, the OU Club of Houston organizes special event opportunities for its members. In the past, the OU Club has arranged for special group seating and ticket discounts to Houston-area events, such as the Houston Ballet, Houston Symphony, Broadway plays performed at the Wortham Theater, Alley Theater, the Hobby Center and Theatre Under the Stars. The OU Club has also organized special seating and ticket prices for the Astros, Rockets and Aeros home games. Please check the Web site event list and calendar for information on upcoming events.
